My name is David King. I was born in the Canadian province of Newfoundland in 1971. When I was a child I used to draw a lot and also continuously build things from my imagination. Lego was my medium of choice back then. Not only was Lego a good primer for my cubist studies but using acrylic paints (being a form of plastic) is a natural step up from the Lego brick ;-)
Much later, after an unsuccesful attempt at taking engineering at Universaity where I became uninterested in such fields of study, I took up drawing and painting with a more serious tempo.
At the same time I studied architectural drafting but it really wasn't for me. I needed to be challenged with the creation of new forms and patterns within the artistic realm and everything else seemed uninteresting to me. Soon I developed an interest in cubism and other more geometric arts and I began to soak up all the books of interest from the local art college and university libraries as well as visit galleries often. I never took any formal education in the arts but through an intense interest and study on my own, I was exposed to many artists' personal visual languages which they had forged which inspired me to try to find my own (which is of course an ongoing process).
For me, the main reason to paint is to discover new things. The activity of painting must not have a fully known result or it becomes uninteresting. Even within my typically more organized designs, there is much room throughout the whole process for discovery. I am a fan of the 'variation on a theme' and enjoy comparing old photos of my works with the same theme just to see how the same theme can be totally unique each time.
Over the last 15 years of selling my paintings, I have had my creations carried off to distant places around the world. They are somewhere out there adorning walls in many places within Canada and the United States, England, Ireland, Iceland, Germany, Malta, Singapore, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other countries.
I continue to create new works while living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada with my wife. |
